People have different outlooks on what it truly means to be healthy, for some people having a defined muscular physique and being strong is the epitome of health and for others, it’s about truly testing cardiovascular endurance through HIT (high-intensity interval training) and other functional training styles. Moreover, there are countless styles of training for everyone and a lot of unsustainable motivators such as training purely for a ‘perfect’ physique, which is where many people lose motivation. People who are mindful of regular exercise and that want to improve their overall health and well-being are proven to have healthier outlooks on life and common mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to start going to the gym and following strict workout routines, walking outside and doing small amounts of regular exercise is enough to reap the mental benefits of a workout. Although this blog post’s focus is on why we should use the gym as our mental playground and a learning resource. Here are some benefits of using the gym to better our mental health. Improved mood – Increases self-confidence, improves mental resilience, and reduces negative effects of stress. Improves brain function and helps with the release of feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters such as endorphins. Builds mental resilience, determination and self-discipline helping people to become mentally strong. Socialisation, the gym is full of people wanting to find new like-minded friends to share their experiences with. These are just a few examples of why everyone should join their local gym for more benefits than just a well-defined physique. We’ve all been there and it’s actually way more common than you may first think, even with individuals who have years of experience using the gym. People experience gym anxiety for many reasons, some purely because they don’t have a plan or know how to use the equipment, while others may feel judged for being a newbie or not looking the part. These are just a couple of examples of people who may suffer from gym anxiety. The truth is nobody who is working on themselves in the gym cares about what other people are doing or how knowledgeable they are about equipment or even exercises. There are a few things you can do to diminish the feelings of gym anxiety such as, Asking a friend to accompany you. Asking for advice from staff. Training during off-peak hours. Have a plan of what and how you’re going to train. Trying a group workout or fitness class.
